The nuchal scan is an assessment of the risk of having a baby with Downs Syndrome .
At the nuchal scan the risk is calculated by combining the age of the pregnant woman and the width of the nuchal fold at the back of the baby’s neck which is seen at the scan. Other markers of Downs syndrome will also be checked, such as whether there is a nasal bone.
By combining the nuchal scan with a blood test (double test) from the mother different markers are examined which gives a more accurate assessment of risk as opposed to only using the scan.
At Jordmoderhusets Ultrasound clinic you may choose a nuchal scan with or without the blood test. If you choose to have the scan and the blood test the scan is always done first followed by the blood test on the same day. After the scan you get a preliminary risk assessment which will be corrected when the result of the blood test is known.
We cooperate with Region Hovedstaden (Public health service) and their elective laboratory and you can expect to get the result of your blood test within 5 days. By appointment with our ultrasound clinic we can inform you of the result via phone or e-mail only. Regardless, we always send the result via e-mail.
Nuchal scans can only be performed by certified sonographers
